How do current political dynamics shape public perception of a country? Join us for "Seeing Haiti Through a Different Lens," as seniors Abigail White and Daniela Brennan from Housatonic Valley Regional High School investigate why public opinion of Haiti strongly highlights the impoverishment, and rampant gang activity often overlooking its rich cultural heritage. Partnering with The Haiti Project, the students will explore ways in which individuals and organizations can showcase the beautiful side of Haiti and educate the public about Haitian culture and society.

Abigail and Daniela are holding this event as a project for their class, Introduction to Human Rights. “We were asked to pick a human rights issue either locally or globally, which we think is important to look into,” said Daniela.
“Once we did more research, we found that Haiti was experiencing immense violence over the past years. After learning more about the violence rising from gangs and civilians, we hope that by sharing the culture we can shed a new light on Haiti. Instead of focusing on the violence, we could be focusing on the life and the future that we can help build. ” — Daniela Brennan
Lila Meade is thrilled to be working with HVRHS students. “While I usually work with college students who create ideas and put them into action, it has been exciting working with Daniela and Abby. This points to the fact that high school students are ready to take on ideas and open to being coached and mentored.”
All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting The Haiti Project’s ongoing programs to promote sustainable development and improve the standard of living for Haitian families.
